Tucked away across the Yamuna River, straight opposite the iconic Taj Mahal, Mehtab Bagh (aka “Moonlight Garden”) is one of Agra’s best-kept secrets. This peaceful, riverside Mughal garden isn’t just another pretty place—it’s the ultimate spot to catch jaw-dropping views of the Taj, especially during sunrise, sunset, or under a full moon. Legend has it that Shah Jahan himself planned this serene space so he could gaze at his beloved monument from the perfect angle.
Why It’s Famous (And Totally Worth Your Time)

First things first: “Mehtab Bagh” literally means “Moonlight Garden,” and yes, it lives up to the hype. This garden was originally built by Emperor Babur and later jazzed up by Shah Jahan (yep, the same guy behind the Taj). It was meant to be part of the grand Taj Mahal complex and reflects classic Mughal landscaping with fountains, pavilions, fruit trees, and pools.
But the real flex? The panoramic view of the Taj Mahal, with its dreamy reflection in the Yamuna River. Picture-perfect doesn’t even begin to cover it—especially at dusk or when the moon hits just right.
Oh, and about that whole “Black Taj Mahal” thing? There’s a long-standing legend that Shah Jahan wanted to build a twin Taj for himself across the river—made entirely of black marble. Though it never happened (thanks to some serious drama with his son Aurangzeb), the myth still adds a layer of mystery to Mehtab Bagh’s story.
What You’ll See
- A massive square garden perfectly aligned with the Taj Mahal
- The only remaining red sandstone tower of the original four
- An octagonal pool once meant to reflect the Taj’s image
- Pavilions, water channels, and Mughal-style symmetry everywhere
- A restored landscape with over 80 native plants and flowering trees (that literally glow under moonlight)
- Chill vibes perfect for birdwatching—especially during migration seasons
How to Reach
Mehtab Bagh is located in Agra, right across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal.
From the USA: Fly into Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi). From there, Agra is about a 3-4 hour drive (or take the Gatimaan Express high-speed train if you’re feeling fancy).
From Agra City: It’s about a 20-minute drive from the Taj Mahal area. Just plug in “Mehtab Bagh” into Google Maps or ask any tuk-tuk or cab driver—they’ll know.
If you’re using public transport, hop off at Agra Fort Railway Station and grab a rickshaw or taxi straight to the garden.
